Officials in Brazil say at least 180 people were killed and 200 more injured after a fire devoured a crowded nightclub in the city of Santa Maria.

Authorities say the fire broke out Sunday morning (27/1) at the club Kiss and although the cause of the fire is not yet known, there bands use fireworks as part of their show.

He said many of the victims died of suffocation or were trampled when clubbers were frantically trying to get out of the building. The death toll could rise as emergency officials are counting the bodies.

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff cut short a visit to Chile on Sunday morning to go home after the fire. Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Tarso Genro, quoted in a Twitter message that said "all possible measures" were taken and that he was on his way to the scene.

Santa Maria is a big university town with a population of about 250,000. The city is located at the southern tip of Brazil near the border with Argentina and Uruguay.

The fire appears to be one of the most casualties in a nightclub after the fire in 2004 that killed 194 people in a nightclub Republica Cromagnon crammed in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
