Obese adolescents at risk of infertility and impotence.
Results of research by scientists at the University at Buffalo in the United States showed obese adolescent males aged 14-20 years had only half the number of total testosterone than adolescents with normal weight or lean.
"Of course, our findings reveal a potentially obese teens suffer from impotence and infertility," explains Dr. Paresh Dandona, quoted by Dailymail (19/10).
The findings in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology previously been observations of 25 obese adolescents and 25 lean bodied teen, who controlled the age and level of sexual maturity.
Researchers took blood samples of volunteers on the morning after fasting previously requested, to determine the level of total and free testosterone and estradiol, an estrogen hormone.
In addition to the problem of infertility, the results of this study also highlights an increase in the amount of abdominal fat and reduced muscle that can lead to insulin resistance, diabetes triggers.
"These findings suggest that the effect of obesity is very strong, even in young children. Intake of nutrition and lifestyle since childhood have a major impact on all stages of a child's life," he added.
